Can a Brooch Double as a Bag Charm?

Can a brooch work as a bag charm? Check pin backs, hanging loops and included clasps, then compare the attachment with the hardware on your bag.

Some brooches can double as bag charms, but check the fittings before you buy. A brooch with a separate hanging loop, chain or clasp may offer both ways to wear it. A pin-only brooch attaches by passing a pin through material; it is not automatically a clip-on charm. If you want a hanging accessory for your bag, look for an attachment made for that use rather than choosing by the front design alone.

A brooch pin and a bag-charm clasp do different jobs

With a brooch, you position the decoration against a surface and secure the pin behind it. With a hanging bag charm, you attach a ring or clasp to a suitable bag fitting and let the decoration hang below. Those arrangements can give the same butterfly, bow or eye-shaped design a different appearance.

For a jacket lapel, you might prefer the decoration held against the fabric. For a tote, you might want it hanging beside the handle. Decide which arrangement you want first. The words "pendant," "brooch" and "bag charm" in a long product name do not tell you which fittings arrive in the package.

Ask to see the back and the included pieces

Check for a pin bar or pin backs, a separate hanging point, and any detachable chain or clasp. Ask the seller which parts you remove when switching uses. A front photograph can show the shape and color while leaving all those details out.

Read "clip" with care. A clip that joins a chain to a bag ring is different from a fitting designed to grip fabric. Ask how the attachment works instead of assuming that either option will fasten to an unbroken bag panel. If the only fitting is a pin, do not expect a hanging, no-pin attachment.

For a bag you do not want to pierce, choose an appropriate existing attachment point and an accessory designed to hang from it. Do not pin through the bag simply because a decoration is sold as a brooch. If your bag has no suitable fitting, choose another accessory rather than improvising a mount.

How a two-way design can work

CHICCHOK's Occult Psych-Butterfly listing describes two back brooch pins and a detachable chain with a heart-shaped clasp. Those separate fittings explain the two uses: pinning the piece as a brooch or hanging it as a bag charm. The gray catalog version below shows the hanging arrangement, with an eye detail and a small cross-shaped charm.

This image does not show the back pins or demonstrate the piece on a bag. If you are considering the Occult Psych-Butterfly brooch and bag charm, confirm the supplied fittings for your chosen color and ask for a back view. Also ask for the clasp opening and total hanging length if you need to compare them with your bag's hardware. The catalog record checked for this article does not provide those measurements.

Check the attachment against your actual bag

Compare the clasp with the ring or loop you intend to use. It needs to close as intended without being forced over the fitting. Do not use a decorative jewelry clasp to replace the bag's working closure or strap connector.

Once attached, lift the bag, open the zip and reach into the pocket you use most. Notice where the charm hangs when you carry the bag against your side. Keep unused brooch pins closed according to the maker's instructions; if you cannot tell how they sit against the bag, ask before using the piece that way.

For a tote-specific attachment decision, see our guide to placing a bag charm on a tote. That is a separate question from whether a brooch has the fittings to hang in the first place.

Choose one use for the outfit you are wearing

Try a brooch on a plain denim-jacket lapel when you want the decoration against your clothing. For a plain tote with a suitable side ring, try the hanging option and check its movement before heading out. You can use the same motif in either outfit without treating the two attachment methods as interchangeable.

If you want to carry keys as well, check that purpose separately. A decorative charm's hanging fitting is not, by itself, a promise about carrying keys. Our bag charm versus keychain comparison covers that choice. For a brooch-to-bag purchase, settle the fittings first, then choose the color and shape you like.
